Opened on July 2, 1969, the future Westgate was named Hotel Internacional. In style, he cut the opening ribbon with a remarkable duet show by the muses of the time, Barbra Streisand and Peggy Lee.
From that start, the enterprise was already showing what it had come for, and on the 31st of the same month, it was the turn of the King of Rock, Elvis Presley, to begin his tour at the hotel’s theater. What was supposed to be a short stint turned into fifty-eight consecutive sold-out shows at the box office.
A real hit with audiences and critics alike, the star heeded the call of Nevada fans clamoring for his return and repeated the series of performances in February and August 1970 and August 1972. His involvement with the city was such that, for a period of his life, Elvis lived in the so-called penthouse suite, located on the 30th floor, until his last performance at the hotel in December 1976.
Returning to other points in history, the establishment has passed through many hands and has had other names, such as Las Vegas Hilton from 1971 until 2012 and the last name LVH – Las Vegas Hotel and Casino, which lasted until last June 2014, when on July 1 of the same year it was renamed Westgate Las Vegas.
In the media
Not only has the hotel had the honor of hosting Elvis, but other artists from different eras have helped to build the history of the place, leaving their mark through music or performance.
To start the list, country singer Reba McEntire signed a contract for a summer season at the hotel in the mid-2000s, getting a full house at her performances.
The charismatic romantic singer Barry Manilow was also present at the theater, and coincidentally or not, the artist occupied one of the three penthouse suites that were built in 1994 to replace the original building in which Elvis lived. Incredible, isn’t it?
Closer to the present day, in 2013, the classic tribute show “Rock Vault” brought together a cast of big names, including Paul Shortino, John Payne, Robin McAuley and Howard Leese.
On the big screen, the BBC documentary Louis Theroux’s was filmed around the hotel, discussing the world of gambling.
The location was also the setting for another documentary, called “Elvis – That’s the way it is”. On the big screen, the famous “Whyte House” casino from the 1971 James Bond film “Diamonds Are Forever” was also filmed at the hotel.
Cassino
In person, the look couldn’t be any different: the 6,900 square meters portray all the decadent glamour of the past with the repainting of modern gaming machines. If entering this area makes you feel like you’ve stepped into a time machine, enjoy it! That’s the casino’s idea, to immerse you in the atmosphere of the mid-seventies.
Boasting one of the largest tournament betting centers, the Race & Sports Book is ready to welcome racing enthusiasts. Big-screen TVs will be able to entertain your bettors at every moment of the championship. Craps, Roulette, Blackjack, Baccarat, Keno, Pai Gow, Poker, or if you prefer, slots or video poker are available in different themes.
Get to know
Next to the gaming area, there is also a lounge (used for the hotel’s closed events) with the theme of the “Star Trek” series emblazoned on the walls.
The reason for this? In January 1998, the attraction “Star Trek: The Experience” was created, which at the time was part of the casino with the space proposal. In addition to the playful décor, the latest generation of gaming machines of the year have been purchased to add even more fun to the place. In 2007, the casino underwent a major refurbishment, which meant it lost its attraction. For the geeks who were already planning to stop by, there are still remnants of what the attraction once was: “spaceship-style” wall panels are still in place and can be seen by the public.
